un ke andāz-e-karam un pe vo aanā dil kā
the way they show kindness, that arrival of the heart
haa.e vo waqt vo bāteñ vo zamāna dil kā
ah, that time, those conversations, that era of the heart
na sunā us ne tavajjoh se fasāna dil kā
they did not listen to the tale with attention
zindagī guzrī magar dard na jaanā dil kā
life passed, but did not know the pain of the heart
kuchh na.ī baat nahīñ husn pe aanā dil kā
there's nothing new in coming to beauty
mashġhala hai ye nihāyat hī purānā dil kā
this is a matter that is extremely old for the heart
vo mohabbat kī shurū'āt vo be-thāh ḳhushī
those beginnings of love, that boundless joy
dekh kar un ko vo phūle na samānā dil kā
seeing them, the heart could not contain its happiness
dil-lagī dil kī lagī ban ke miTā detī hai
the affection of the heart, when it becomes a bond, it erases
rog dushman ko bhī yā-rab na lagānā dil kā
oh God, do not let even the enemy feel the pain of the heart
mere pahlū meñ nahīñ aap kī muTThī meñ nahīñ
not in my side, not in your fist
be-Thikāna hai bahut din se Thikānā dil kā
the heart has been homeless for many days
vo bhī apne na hue dil bhī gayā hāthoñ se
they did not become theirs, the heart also slipped from hands
aise aane se to behtar thā na aanā dil kā
better than this arrival would have been not to come at all
ḳhuub haiñ aap bahut ḳhuub magar yaad rahe
you are very beautiful, but remember
zeb detā nahīñ aisoñ ko satānā dil kā
they do not adorn those who torment the heart
be-jhijak aa ke milo hañs ke milāo āñkheñ
come without hesitation, meet, and smile, join eyes
aao ham tum ko sikhāte haiñ milānā dil kā
come, we will teach you how to unite the heart
naqsh-bar-āb nahīñ vahm nahīñ ḳhvāb nahīñ
there is no imprint, no illusion, no dream
aap kyoñ khel samajhte haiñ miTānā dil kā
why do you think it is a game to erase the heart?
hasrateñ ḳhaak huiiñ miT ga.e armāñ saare
longings have turned to dust, all desires have vanished
luT gayā kūcha-e-jānāñ meñ ḳhazāna dil kā
the treasure of the heart has been lost in the street of beloved
le chalā hai mire pahlū se ba-sad-shauq koī
someone has taken away my side with great eagerness
ab to mumkin hī nahīñ lauT ke aanā dil kā
now it is no longer possible to return to the heart
un kī mahfil meñ 'nasīr' un ke tabassum kī qasam
in their gathering, 'Nasir', by the oath of their smile
dekh te rah ga.e ham haath se jaanā dil kā
we kept watching with our hands the departure of the heart

Explanation

In this poignant ghazal, Peer Syed Naseeruddin Naseer Gilani explores the complexities of love and longing, encapsulating the emotional turmoil that accompanies affectionate relationships. The opening couplet, "un ke andāz-e-karam un pe vo aanā dil kā," introduces the theme of kindness and the heart's response to it, suggesting a deep emotional connection that is both cherished and painful. The subsequent lines, particularly "haa.e vo waqt vo bāteñ vo zamāna dil kā," evoke nostalgia for a time filled with meaningful conversations and shared moments, emphasizing the transient nature of such experiences.

As the poem progresses, the speaker reflects on unreciprocated feelings in lines like "na sunā us ne tavajjoh se fasāna dil kā," where the lack of attention from the beloved leads to a sense of isolation. This emotional arc shifts from a hopeful yearning to a painful realization, as expressed in "zindagī guzrī magar dard na jaanā dil kā," highlighting the disconnect between life’s passage and the persistent ache of unfulfilled love.

The poet employs rich imagery and metaphors, such as in "dil-lagī dil kī lagī ban ke miTā detī hai," where love is depicted as a force that can erase pain, suggesting the duality of love as both a source of joy and suffering. The use of rhetorical questions, such as "aap kyoñ khel samajhte haiñ miTānā dil kā," invites the reader to ponder the nature of love and its complexities, enhancing the emotional depth of the poem.

Ultimately, the ghazal culminates in a sense of resignation and loss, as seen in the lines "hasrateñ ḳhaak huiiñ miT ga.e armāñ saare," where the speaker laments the obliteration of desires. The closing couplet reinforces the theme of longing, as the speaker acknowledges the impossibility of returning to a state of innocence and connection, encapsulating the bittersweet essence of love that permeates Gilani's work.
