Translation
You say about everything, what is it to you?
I tell you, what kind of conversation is this?
Neither is this charm in the flame, nor this grace in the lightning.
Someone tell me, what is that mischievous, fierce nature?
Is it envy that he speaks with you?
Otherwise, what is the fear of the enemy's bad influence?
Blood is sticking to the body from the garment.
Now what need do we have for stitching our pockets?
Where the body is burnt, the heart must have burned too.
What are you searching for now in the ashes?
We are not convinced of running through the veins.
If it didn't drip from the eye, then what is blood?
That thing for which paradise is dear to us,
Except for the wine of the fragrant musk, what is it?
If I drink wine, even if I see a few jars,
What are this glass, goblet, pitcher, and cup?
There is no strength left to speak, and even if there is,
On what hope should I say, what is desire?
The king's companion has become proud and struts around.
Otherwise, what is Ghalib's reputation in the city?

Explanation

In this poignant ghazal, Mirza Ghalib explores themes of love, longing, and existential despair, encapsulating the complexities of human emotion. The opening couplet, "ہر ایک بات پہ کہتے ہو تم کہ تو کیا ہے," sets the tone, questioning the significance of the speaker's experiences and feelings. This rhetorical questioning continues with, "تمہیں کہو کہ یہ اندازِ گفتگو کیا ہے," which reflects a sense of frustration at the superficiality of communication.

As the poem progresses, Ghalib employs vivid imagery to convey deeper emotional states. Lines such as "نہ شعلے میں یہ کرشمہ نہ برق میں یہ ادا" illustrate the absence of enchantment in the natural world, suggesting that true beauty and charm are elusive. The speaker's longing is palpable as he wonders about the nature of a beloved's temperament, asking, "کوئی بتاؤ کہ وہ شوخِ تند خو کیا ہے."

The emotional arc shifts from longing to a sense of resignation as Ghalib reflects on the pain of love and loss. The line "چپک رہا ہے بدن پر لہو سے پیراہن" evokes a visceral image of suffering, while the subsequent lines articulate a profound sense of despair and futility. The speaker questions the very essence of life and love, pondering, "جب آنکھ سے ہی نہ ٹپکا تو پھر لہو کیا ہے."

Ghalib's masterful use of literary devices enhances the poem's impact. The repetition of rhetorical questions creates a rhythm that mirrors the speaker's internal turmoil. Additionally, the metaphors of fire and blood serve to illustrate the intensity of emotion and the physicality of pain. Ultimately, this ghazal reflects Ghalib's profound understanding of the human condition, capturing the essence of love, loss, and the search for meaning in a tumultuous world.
