My chest is filled with blood
Oh, this intoxicated tavern of mine
Who boasts of being unreachable
Alas, that unfulfilled desire of mine
The heart, struck by grief, is punished by God
My chest is torn apart by sighs
From the fierce and sharp gusts of memory
Today every wound has ignited
Oh God, the memory of the past is a torment
Take away my memory from me
I am free from the wheel of fate
I have not been forgotten while I am alive
Life is a great amusement, Akhtar
What do they ask about my activities?

Explanation

In this poignant ghazal, Akhtar Ansari explores themes of love, loss, and the torment of memory. The opening line, "My chest is filled with blood," sets a visceral tone, suggesting deep emotional pain. The subsequent line, "Oh, this intoxicated tavern of mine," evokes a sense of longing and perhaps a desire for escape, indicating that the poet finds solace in the intoxication of memories, even if they are painful. The couplet about inaccessibility and unfulfilled desire reveals the speaker's frustration with unattainable love, emphasizing a sense of yearning that permeates the poem.

As the poem progresses, the imagery of wounds igniting from memories illustrates how past experiences can resurface with intensity, causing renewed suffering. The line, "Oh God, the memory of the past is torment," underscores the speaker's struggle with recollection, suggesting that memories can be both cherished and painful. The plea to take away his memory reflects a desire to escape the burden of the past, highlighting the conflict between love and suffering.

The emotional arc transitions from deep sorrow to a resignation towards life's challenges. The tone shifts from despair to a more reflective stance, as the poet acknowledges the amusement of life despite its hardships. The concluding lines, which question the significance of one's pastimes, suggest a search for meaning amidst the chaos of emotions.

Literary devices such as metaphor and vivid imagery enhance the emotional impact of the poem. The metaphor of the chest filled with blood symbolizes profound grief, while the gusts of memory serve as a powerful image of how the past can intrude upon the present. Ultimately, this ghazal captures the essence of human experience—love, loss, and the inescapable nature of memory—making it a significant contribution to Urdu literature.
