Translation
I sacrifice myself in your streets, O homeland where
it has become customary for no one to walk with their head held high.
Whoever desires to perform the pilgrimage
walks with their gaze averted, protecting body and soul.
For the people of heart, this is now a poem of confinement and expansion,
as stones and bricks are imprisoned while dogs roam free.
There is much cruelty in the hands of those who have excuses for it,
those few who are the lovers of your name.
The people of greed have become both accuser and judge,
whom should we appoint as our lawyer, from whom should we seek justice?
But the days of those who endure pass by,
in your separation, they spend their mornings and evenings.
When the window of the prison dims, the heart understands
that your forehead must be filled with stars.
When the chains shine, we understand
that now the dawn must have spread over your face.
In short, we live in the imagination of evening and morning,
we live under the shadow of walls and doors.
Thus, the people have always been entangled with oppression,
neither their customs are new nor our traditions new.
Thus, we have always bloomed flowers in the fire,
neither their defeat is new nor our victory new.
For this reason, we do not complain to the heavens,
we do not harbor ill will in your separation.
If today we are apart, tomorrow we will be together,
this separation for one night is not a big deal.
If today the fate of the rival is high, so what?
This rule of four days is not a big deal.
Those who keep their promise of loyalty to you,
they have remedies for the cycles of night and day.

Explanation

Faiz Ahmad Faiz expresses profound love and longing for his homeland, intertwining themes of oppression and hope. The opening lines, "نثار میں تری گلیوں کے اے وطن کہ جہاں", set a tone of sacrifice and devotion, indicating the speaker's willingness to give everything for their homeland. The subsequent lines explore the societal norms that suppress individuality, as seen in the phrase, "چلی ہے رسم کہ کوئی نہ سر اٹھا کے چلے", highlighting a culture of submission and fear.

As the poem progresses, Faiz reflects on the plight of the lovers of the homeland, who must navigate their devotion cautiously, as indicated by "نظر چرا کے چلے جسم و جاں بچا کے چلے". This imagery evokes a sense of vulnerability and the need for self-preservation amidst societal constraints. The poem also addresses the duality of justice and oppression, with lines like "بنے ہیں اہل ہوس مدعی بھی منصف بھی", suggesting that those who seek justice are often the same as those who perpetrate injustice.

The emotional arc of the poem transitions from despair to a resilient hope, as Faiz acknowledges the pain of separation yet reassures that this is temporary, stating, "گر آج تجھ سے جدا ہیں تو کل بہم ہوں گے". This reflects a tone of optimism amidst adversity, emphasizing the cyclical nature of struggle and reunion.

Faiz employs various literary devices, including metaphor and imagery, to deepen the reader's engagement. The metaphor of chains and prisons in lines like "چمک اٹھے ہیں سلاسل تو ہم نے جانا ہے" symbolizes the constraints of both physical and emotional captivity. Additionally, the repetition of themes of separation and reunion reinforces the poem's message of enduring love and loyalty.

Ultimately, the poem serves as a poignant commentary on the socio-political landscape of Faiz's time, reflecting his commitment to social justice and the hope for a better future. It resonates with the struggles of the oppressed, making it a timeless piece that continues to inspire generations.
