Original Poetry
Translation
A person sat down feeling hopeless
I didn't know the person
I was familiar with hopelessness
So I approached that person
I offered my hand
He stood up by holding my hand
He didn't know me
He recognized the gesture of my extended hand
We walked together
We were strangers to each other
But we understood walking together.

Explanation

Vinod Kumar Shukla's poem captures the essence of human empathy and connection through simple yet profound imagery. The poem begins with an image of a person sitting in despair, a universal emotion that the speaker recognizes and responds to. By extending a hand, the speaker bridges the gap between strangers, highlighting the power of small gestures to create understanding and support.

The poem's structure emphasizes the parallel between knowing despair and knowing the gesture of reaching out. The repetition of 'knowing' underscores the shared human experiences that connect us, even when we do not know each other personally. The act of walking together symbolizes solidarity and companionship, transcending the need for personal acquaintance.

Emotionally, the poem moves from isolation to connection, portraying a journey from individual despair to shared understanding. The tone is empathetic and hopeful, suggesting that human bonds can be formed through simple acts of kindness.

Shukla employs free verse to allow the poem's natural rhythm and flow to mirror the simplicity of the actions described. The absence of rhyme or strict meter reflects the unstructured, spontaneous nature of human interaction. The poem's imagery is vivid yet straightforward, making it accessible and relatable.

Ultimately, the poem speaks to the universal human need for connection and the ways in which empathy can transform isolation into companionship. It reflects Shukla's broader literary themes of simplicity and the beauty of everyday human experiences, contributing to the richness of modern Hindi literature.
