Winters fivefold in the distance
Five winters away in the distance
The fire troubled, flame doused
The fire is troubled, the flame is put out
Haunted smoldering ruin
A haunted, smoldering ruin
Dims the sun
Makes the sun dim
Intent to extinguish
With the intention to put out
Sunsets unnumbered, itself drowned
Countless sunsets, itself submerged
In poison with ruthless abundance
In poison with cruel abundance
Reduce a star to ashes
Turns a star into ashes
Sun's dismay
The sun's sadness
The body resilient
The body is strong
From the ashes
From the ashes
Begrudgingly awoke the sun
The sun reluctantly woke up
To shine another day
To shine for another day

Explanation

This poem explores the themes of struggle, resilience, and the cyclical nature of despair and hope. The opening lines, "Winters fivefold in the distance," evoke a sense of prolonged suffering, suggesting that the harshness of winter symbolizes a difficult period in life. The imagery of a "troubled fire" and "flame doused" further emphasizes the struggle against extinguishing hope, as the fire represents warmth and life. The phrase "Haunted smoldering ruin" indicates the remnants of past struggles that continue to linger, casting a shadow over the present, as it "Dims the sun."

The second stanza deepens this exploration of despair, with lines like "Intent to extinguish" and "Sunsets unnumbered, itself drowned" illustrating the relentless nature of challenges faced. The use of "poison with ruthless abundance" suggests that negativity and hardship can overwhelm one's spirit, reducing potential to mere ashes. This stark imagery conveys a sense of hopelessness, yet it also sets the stage for a transformation.

In the final stanza, the tone shifts as the speaker acknowledges the "body resilient" that emerges from the ashes. The phrase "begrudgingly awoke the sun" suggests a reluctant return to hope and vitality, indicating that even after profound struggles, the possibility of renewal exists. The concluding line, "To shine another day," encapsulates the poem's core message: despite the darkness and despair, there is always the potential for rebirth and light.

The poem employs vivid imagery and metaphor to convey its themes, using the sun as a symbol of hope and resilience. The free verse form allows for a fluid expression of emotions, reflecting the unpredictability of life's challenges. Overall, this piece resonates with the human experience of navigating through darkness towards the light of a new day.
