Here Alone
Here alone,
Stephen L. Harrison
I am by myself,
Here alone,
not physically, but within my own mind.
I swing, suspended.
Sharp and quick hits,
Not in air, but in myself.
arrive.
Blows, sharp and swift,
They hurt,
come.
like a needle's prick,
They sting,
or the faint sound of a forgotten name.
like the prick of a needle,
I cherish them,
or the whisper of a forgotten name.
every single one—
I love them,
friends, life, the daily experiences—
each one
like the soft touch of a quill,
friends, life, the salt spray of every day
stories etched on my skin.
like the gentle scrape of a quill,
Every touch,
stories written on my skin.
is a silent message,
Each touch,
going deep,
a wordless message,
to the core of my being.
reaching deep,
To where my emotions reside.
down to the heart of me.
I sense them,
To the place where feelings live.
every beat, every pulse.
I feel them,
And I remain silent.
every pulse, every throb.
No sound comes out.
And I say nothing.
No "thank you,"
No sound escapes.
for the comfort.
No "thank you,"
No "ouch,"
for the comfort.
for the hurt.
No "ouch,"
No words,
for the pain.
not even one sound.
No word,
This space,
not a single syllable.
belongs to me.
This space,
Only to me.
it's mine.
A calm room,
Just mine.
created inside.
A quiet room,
And in this space,
built within.
I am not confused.
And in this room,
I am not alone,
I am not lost.
in the way you might assume.
I am not lonely,
I exist here.
in the way you might think.
I feel at home.
I am here.
By myself,
I am home.
but not void.
Alone,
Filled with reality.
but not empty.
Filled with my essence.
Full of what is.
Full of me.

Explanation

In Stephen L. Harrison's poem "Here Alone," the speaker explores the profound experience of solitude and self-acceptance. The opening lines establish a sense of isolation, with the speaker stating, "Here alone, I swing, suspended." This metaphor of being suspended suggests a state of introspection, where the speaker is not physically adrift but rather navigating their inner world. The subsequent lines introduce the idea of pain, as the speaker describes blows that "sting, like the prick of a needle," evoking a visceral connection between physical sensations and emotional experiences.

The speaker expresses a complex relationship with these sensations, declaring, "I love them, each one—friends, life, the salt spray of every day." This juxtaposition of love and pain illustrates the duality of existence; the speaker finds value in both the joys and the sorrows of life. The imagery of "stories written on my skin" suggests that every experience, whether pleasurable or painful, contributes to the speaker's identity and narrative.

As the poem progresses, the tone shifts towards a deeper exploration of silence and introspection. The speaker acknowledges their feelings but chooses not to vocalize them, stating, "And I say nothing. No sound escapes." This silence is significant; it conveys a sense of acceptance and ownership of their emotional landscape. The speaker's assertion that the space they inhabit is "just mine" reinforces the idea of personal sovereignty over one's inner world.

Ultimately, the poem concludes with a powerful affirmation of self. The speaker declares, "I am here. I am home. Alone, but not empty." This final sentiment encapsulates the essence of the poem: solitude does not equate to loneliness. Instead, it is a state of being filled with self-awareness and acceptance. Harrison's work resonates with contemporary themes of identity and the human condition, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences of solitude and the richness it can bring.
