Rzi na rukou
Rust on hands
V suchém roce
In a dry year
zem zjizvenou
the land is scarred
jak záda nevolníka
like a serf's back
děd můj obdělal.
my grandfather worked on it.
Písek sypal se na něžnou hlavu,
Sand fell on a gentle head,
když otec vzal do náručí,
when my father held me,
pohrával si s jeho vousy.
I played with his beard.
Dnes duše zmokla
Today my soul is wet
zatuchlý pach pokoje mého
the musty smell of my room
umocňuje prázdný chlad.
makes the emptiness colder.
Rzi na rukou mých
Rust on my hands
svrbí
itches
seškrábat se nedají.
can't be scraped off.
Puchýře z dětství rozpraskané
My childhood blisters cracked
v mechovém háji rozmočeny
soaked in a mossy grove
přesto pálí při kroku.
but they still burn with every step.
Do slatě vstupuji
I step into the marsh
voda se na hruď tlačí
water presses on my chest
vlhkost mne objímá.
moisture hugs me.
Jedloví
Fir grove
Šel jsem do jedloví,
I went to the fir grove,
tam, kde jsem viděl naposledy,
where I last saw you,
bez tebe se mi les
without you the forest
rozpadá na stromy.
falls apart into trees.
Hodiny strnulé
Frozen hours
ústa prázdná
empty mouths
dlaně studené.
cold hands.
Matko, nemohl za tvou sukní
Mother, I couldn't find my place
najít své místo.
behind your skirt.
Nejdřív teplo
First warmth
potom chlad
then cold
sucho
dryness
zmar
ruin
na konci tříska
at the end a splinter
pod víčkem.
under the eyelid.
Přibitý ke stromu
Nailed to a tree
smůla mi slepila vlasy.
resin stuck my hair.
Úsměv mezi stíny
Smile among shadows
Tma sedá do prázdných koutů,
Darkness settles in empty corners,
dítě v tichu tají dech.
a child holds its breath in silence.
Vítej, samoto
Welcome, solitude
bezesných nocí,
of sleepless nights,
všichni umřeli přede mnou.
everyone died before me.
mám jen tu loutku,
I only have this puppet,
sestra mi ji dala,
my sister gave it to me,
abych nebyl sám.
so I wouldn't be alone.
Její úsměv mezi stíny
Its smile among shadows
zůstal mi v očích.
stayed in my eyes.
Vzal jsem ji do rukou,
I took it in my hands,
hladil její rudé vlasy.
stroked its red hair.
Vzal ji za ty pačesy
I grabbed it by the hair
a hlavičku utrhnul.
and tore off its head.
Potom lehko,
Then lightness,
ticho
silence
v chladné noci.
in the cold night.
Vepsáno v mase
Written in flesh
Tam, kde krev inkoust políbí,
Where blood kisses ink,
tam, kde maso ránu ovíjí,
where flesh wraps a wound,
tam nechám si napsat tvé jméno.
there I will have your name written.
Nesu na sobě dopis
I carry a letter on me
slova pálí ramena.
the words burn my shoulders.
Projít trním
Pass through thorns
tělem dokořán.
body wide open.
Slova tichá,
Silent words,
kůže křičí.
skin screams.
Prasklinka ve stvoření
Crack in creation
Zuby carevny drtí spálená zrna,
My empress's teeth crush burnt grains,
její něžný pohled
her gentle gaze
mne probouzí ze snění
awakens me from dreaming
o omylu prvního dne.
of the mistake of the first day.
Po rankách tvých,
On your wounds,
mnou způsobených,
caused by me,
stéká getsemanský pot.
Gethsemane sweat drips.
Konečky tvých prstů
I bite your fingertips
skousnu o trochu pevněji.
a little harder.
Touha ,
My desire,
zamotaná okolo kotníků,
tangled around ankles,
nezná lože měkčí
knows no softer bed
než tvé kostnaté kyčle.
than your bony hips.
Samota rodiny
Family solitude
Láska páchnoucí tajným brekem na záchodě,
Love smelling of secret sobs in the toilet,
nekonečnou nudou a brzkými útěky do práce,
endless boredom and early escapes to work,
zatlouká do tebe půlmetrové hřeby výčitek.
drives half-meter nails of reproach into you.
V chudobě rozvrácenejch rodin
In the poverty of broken families
si malý holky kreslí čáry do rukou.
little girls draw lines on their hands.
V chudobě rozvrácenejch rodin
In the poverty of broken families
si kluci staví bunkry z domácí prázdnoty.
boys build bunkers from domestic emptiness.
Šrámy do konce života,
Scars for life,
nebe zaseklé ve výtahové šachtě,
heaven stuck in an elevator shaft,
uvězněni tam,
imprisoned there,
kde kaluže v asfaltu pod okny
where puddles in asphalt under windows
mlčí.
are silent.
Svátost sebezmaření
Sacrament of self-destruction
Bůh břicho své rozřezává
God cuts open his belly
zdi kravína rozpadlého
the walls of a crumbling barn
hledí do rudých spár.
look into red cracks.
Záplava krve valí se k nohám
A flood of blood rolls to the feet
země pod nedýchá.
the earth beneath it does not breathe.
Panna němá
A mute virgin
z hrudek krve sražených
from clotted blood lumps
probouzí se v zimniční třes.
awakens in a feverish tremor.
Strastí pobytu svého svíjí se
Twisting in the agony of its stay
krev a tělo Boží
blood and body of God
bez obřadu polyká.
swallows without ceremony.
Nový Jeruzalém
New Jerusalem
plevelí prázdné žlaby.
weeds empty troughs.
Hranice jsoucna
Borders of being
Popel lží sypal se na mou hlavu,
Ashes of lies poured on my head,
když z mých ran vytékalo nejčirejší mléko,
when the purest milk flowed from my wounds,
andělé pak jenom pro mne
angels then only for me
mantru opakovali.
repeated a mantra.
Panna Marie a Kálí
Virgin Mary and Kali
tančí
dance
na pohřební hranici
on the funeral pyre
těla černají.
bodies blacken.
Boží Dítě
God's Child
roste model po modelu
grows model by model
v rytmu těch,
in the rhythm of those
co zadusili oheň mého srdce.
who smothered the fire of my heart.
Dítě je Šelmou i Kristem
The child is both Beast and Christ
v nové schráně.
in a new vessel.
Nové riziko Konce
New risk of the End
Neomylná bytost
Infallible being
nesoucí slávu stvořitelů svých,
bearing the glory of its creators,
znamení světa,
sign of a world,
kde hodnota je bez těla.
where value is bodiless.
Sláva dnes mocných,
Glory of the powerful today,
zítra mocnějších,
more powerful tomorrow,
sláva těch, co se nebojí riskovat,
glory of those who dare to risk,
co se nebojí Konce.
who are not afraid of the End.
Démoni sedící na smyčkách dopaminu
Demons sitting on loops of dopamine
činí mne hladovým duchem.
make me a hungry spirit.
Nemohu dosáhnout štěstí
I cannot reach happiness
přes úzké hrdlo svého času.
through the narrow neck of my time.
Poslední pohled k singularitě
Last glance at singularity
před pádem za horizont,
before falling beyond the horizon,
poslední momenty žitého světa
last moments of the lived world
před šťastným nekonečnem.
before happy infinity.
Obětinka
Sacrifice
Děcko z hvozdu vyběhlo
A child ran out of the forest
nožky jeho holé
its bare feet
dusají prašné pole
thumping the dusty field
otřesy nejisté
uncertain tremors
přesto úprk značící
yet marking a dash
v očích jeho děsy
in its eyes fears
strachy plovoucí.
floating terrors.
Z potemnělého remízku
From a dark thicket
podivná postava ptačí
a strange bird-like figure
spěchá
hurries
kvačí
rushes
dere se ve spěchu
pushes through in haste
nohy křehké hadilova
legs fragile like a snake's
drápy silné harpie
claws strong like a harpy's
zobák orlí z hlavy trčí
an eagle's beak juts from its head
ohon paví za ním svítí.
a peacock tail shines behind.
Dítko nártík pod hlínu zaryje
The child buries its foot under the soil
klukovské odřeniny jeho
its boyish abrasions
znova krví pokrupělé
again blood-crusted
ptačisko drápy do zad zarývá,
The bird creature digs claws into its back,
v zobáku očičko
in its beak an eye
po chvilce dřímá.
soon sleeps.
Nakrmen dravec křídly vichr vyvolá
Fed, the predator calls the wind with wings
mršinku tak pod půdu pohřbí.
thus buries the carcass under the ground.
V noci matka s lucernou
At night the mother with a lantern
zem tu pošlape
treads the earth
slzy vláhu dodají.
the tears add moisture.
Černý tulipán vykvete.
A black tulip blooms.

Explanation

This collection of poems, written in Czech, explores themes of existential angst, solitude, and the passage of time. The imagery is vivid and often dark, reflecting the emotional depth and complexity of the human experience. The poems delve into personal and familial relationships, often highlighting feelings of isolation and longing.

In "Rzi na rukou," the poet uses the metaphor of rust on hands to symbolize the inescapable marks of time and hardship. The imagery of a grandfather working the land and the speaker's childhood memories create a sense of nostalgia and loss. The poem transitions from the warmth of familial bonds to the coldness of solitude and decay.

The emotional arc of the poems often moves from a sense of warmth or connection to coldness and isolation. This is evident in "Jedloví," where the absence of a loved one transforms the forest into mere trees, and in "Úsměv mezi stíny," where a child's solitude is both comforted and haunted by a puppet.

The poet employs various literary devices, such as metaphor, personification, and vivid imagery, to evoke strong emotional responses. The use of contrasting images, such as warmth and coldness, or light and darkness, enhances the themes of loss and longing.

Overall, these poems reflect the complexities of modern life, where personal and existential struggles are intertwined. They capture the essence of contemporary Czech poetry, which often grapples with themes of identity, memory, and the passage of time.
