My own universe.
My own universe.
He learned quite early that his mind ran deep,
He learned quite early that his mind ran deep,
That questions others left untouched would keep
He realized that he thought deeply from a young age,
His restless thoughts awake long after night,
That questions others left untouched would keep
While simple answers never felt quite right.
That unanswered questions would linger in his mind,
Sometimes he knew itsometimes just believed
His restless thoughts awake long after night,
That he saw things others somehow never perceived.
His restless thoughts stayed awake long into the night,
And yes, there were a few he could outthink,
While simple answers never felt quite right.
A step ahead while others stopped to think.
While easy answers never seemed satisfactory.
He saw the patterns hiding in the noise,
Sometimes he knew it—sometimes just believed—
The things between the words, the pause, the choice.
Sometimes he was aware of it—other times he just thought it was true—
But somewhere pride began to blur the view,
That he saw things others somehow never perceived.
And he forgot that being sharp could blind him too.
That he noticed things others didn't seem to see.
So conversations started feeling thin,
And yes, there were a few he could outthink,
Too much repeating, not enough within.
And indeed, there were a few he could outsmart,
He'd speak of things that lived beneath the skin,
A step ahead while others stopped to think.
Of time and fear and why we carry sin.
He was ahead while others paused to consider.
They'd smile, he'd nod, and let the moment pass,
He saw the patterns hiding in the noise,
Then wonder why connection always felt like glass.
He noticed the patterns concealed in the chaos,
He started keeping more of life inside,
The things between the words, the pause, the choice.
Where every contradiction could collide.
The meanings hidden between words, the pauses, the decisions.
He questioned what he thought, then questioned that,
But somewhere pride began to blur the view,
And pulled apart the things he called a fact.
But at some point, his pride started to distort his perspective,
He became a country only he could see,
And he forgot that being sharp could blind him too.
A crowded world inhabited by one lonely me.
And he forgot that being too clever could also blind him.
Yet there are nights he wonders what it means
So conversations started feeling thin,
To trade the difficult for easier scenes
So conversations began to feel superficial,
To settle for a hand that doesn't reach
Too much repeating, not enough within.
The hidden places language cannot teach.
Too much repetition, not enough depth.
Would comfort be enough to make him stay,
He'd speak of things that lived beneath the skin,
Or would some quiet part of him still drift away?
He would discuss matters that lay beneath the surface,
Because solitude has never been the same
Of time and fear and why we carry sin.
As being understood without the game.
Of time, fear, and the reasons we bear guilt.
He does not need a crowd to call him wise,
They'd smile, he'd nod, and let the moment pass,
Or someone dazzled by the way he sees the skies.
They would smile, he would nod, and let the moment go by,
He wants a mind that questions him as well,
Then wonder why connection always felt like glass.
Someone who can wander where his thoughts compel.
Then he would wonder why connection felt fragile.
So he waits, though waiting wears him thin,
He started keeping more of life inside,
For someone whose strange frequencies fit his own skin;
He began to hide more of his life within,
Someone who can argue without war,
Where every contradiction could collide.
Who sees the hidden door behind the door.
Where every conflicting thought could clash.
A soul aligned enough to understand
He questioned what he thought, then questioned that,
The language neither ever had to plan.
He doubted his own thoughts, then doubted those doubts,
And maybe he is foolish to believe
And pulled apart the things he called a fact.
That somewhere there is someone he won't have to leave.
And dissected the things he considered to be facts.
Maybe the world is full of almosts, not exacts,
He became a country only he could see,
Of beautiful mistakes and imperfect overlaps.
He became a world only he could perceive,
Still, he would rather guard that fragile flame
A crowded world inhabited by one lonely me.
Than choose a life that never asks his mind to change.
A crowded place filled with only his loneliness.
For somewhere beyond all the noise he cannot bear,
Yet there are nights he wonders what it means
He believes there is a mind that will meet him there.
Yet on some nights, he ponders what it signifies To trade the difficult for easier scenes— To exchange the challenging for simpler situations— To settle for a hand that doesn't reach To accept a touch that doesn't connect The hidden places language cannot teach. To the hidden depths that words cannot convey. Would comfort be enough to make him stay, Would mere comfort be sufficient to keep him there, Or would some quiet part of him still drift away? Or would some silent part of him still wander off? Because solitude has never been the same Because solitude has never felt like As being understood without the game. Being understood without the pretense. He does not need a crowd to call him wise, He does not require a crowd to be deemed wise, Or someone dazzled by the way he sees the skies. Or someone impressed by his unique perspective. He wants a mind that questions him as well, He desires a mind that challenges him too, Someone who can wander where his thoughts compel. Someone who can explore where his thoughts lead. So he waits, though waiting wears him thin, So he waits, although waiting exhausts him, For someone whose strange frequencies fit his own skin; For someone whose unique vibrations resonate with him; Someone who can argue without war, Someone who can debate without conflict, Who sees the hidden door behind the door. Who perceives the concealed entrance behind the obvious. A soul aligned enough to understand A spirit in tune enough to comprehend The language neither ever had to plan. The unspoken language they never had to devise. And maybe he is foolish to believe And perhaps he is naive to think That somewhere there is someone he won't have to leave. That somewhere exists someone he won't have to abandon. Maybe the world is full of almosts, not exacts, Perhaps the world is filled with near misses, not certainties, Of beautiful mistakes and imperfect overlaps. Of lovely errors and flawed intersections. Still, he would rather guard that fragile flame Yet, he would prefer to protect that delicate light Than choose a life that never asks his mind to change. Than to live a life that never challenges his thoughts. For somewhere beyond all the noise he cannot bear, For somewhere beyond all the chaos he cannot tolerate, He believes there is a mind that will meet him there. He trusts there is a mind that will connect with him there.

Explanation

This poem explores the intricate landscape of a thoughtful individual's mind, emphasizing the tension between deep introspection and the desire for genuine connection. The speaker reflects on his unique perspective, stating, "He learned quite early that his mind ran deep," which sets the stage for a journey through the complexities of thought and emotion. As he grapples with the limitations of superficial interactions, he realizes that, "conversations started feeling thin," indicating a longing for depth in communication. The imagery of a mind as a 'country' suggests isolation, as he feels like, "A crowded world inhabited by one lonely me," highlighting the paradox of being surrounded yet alone.

The emotional arc of the poem shifts from a sense of pride in his intellect to a recognition of its isolating effects. The speaker's pride, which initially fuels his confidence, ultimately leads to a blurring of perspective, as seen in the line, "But somewhere pride began to blur the view." This realization prompts him to question not just his thoughts but the very nature of connection, as he wonders, "Would comfort be enough to make him stay," reflecting a deep-seated fear of loneliness despite his intellectual pursuits.

Craft-wise, the poem employs free verse to mirror the fluidity of thought, while the use of enjambment creates a sense of continuity and urgency. The repetition of phrases like "someone" emphasizes the speaker's yearning for connection, while metaphors such as "hidden door behind the door" evoke the complexity of understanding. The poem's significance lies in its exploration of the human condition—how the quest for understanding and connection can lead to both enlightenment and isolation, resonating with contemporary themes of identity and introspection in modern poetry.
