The crashing waves dissolve the shore,

Translation
The crashing waves dissolve the shore,
The loud waves break down the land by the sea,
As tides surrender to the sea,
As the sea levels rise and fall,
Where ancient monarchs dance once more,
Where old kings move again,
In wild, unburdened majesty.
In untamed, carefree beauty.
No robes of silk, no crowns of gold,
No long clothes of soft material, no headpieces of precious metal,
They wear the moonlight on their skin,
They have the moon's light on their bodies,
A timeless story, stark and bold,
An eternal tale, clear and strong,
Born where the endless deeps begin.
Created where the limitless ocean starts.
Both beautiful in silver light,
Both pleasing in shiny gray-white light,
They move to rhythms long forgot,
They go to patterns of movement long forgotten,
Two shadows cast against the night,
Two dark shapes appear against the darkness,
Bound to a world the courts are not.
Tied to a place that royal homes are not.
The ocean hums its timeless tune,
The ocean makes a continuous sound,
A breathless, rising melody,
An awe-inspiring, increasing series of notes,
The sacred song of sea and moon,
The respected music of the sea and moon,
That sets the captive spirits free.
That frees the trapped souls.
Their kingdom has no walls of stone,
Their realm has no solid barriers,
Only the shift of drifting sands,
Only the movement of floating grains,
Where sorrow cannot claim a throne,
Where sadness cannot take control,
Nor shadows bind a spectral hand.
Nor dark shapes hold a ghostly arm.
The human world is far away,
The world of people is distant,
A fading spark of dust and pride,
A disappearing flash of tiny particles and self-respect,
While they remain until the day,
While they continue to exist until the time,
To rule the turning of the tide.
To control the changing sea levels.
And as the morning steals the night,
And as the daytime quietly takes away the darkness,
The silver fades to gentle gold,
The shiny gray-white turns to soft yellow,
They melt into the waking light,
They change into the brightening glow,
As softly as a prayer retold.
In a gentle manner like a solemn request told again.
No longer bound, no longer cast
No more tied, no more thrown
To wander through the lonely deep,
To roam without purpose in the deep waters,
The weary monarchs rest at last,
The tired rulers relax at last,
Where quiet waters sink to sleep
Where calm waters go down to rest.

Explanation

This poem explores the relationship between nature and the human experience, using the imagery of the ocean and its tides as a metaphor for freedom and timelessness. The opening lines, "The crashing waves dissolve the shore," evoke a sense of powerful natural forces at work, suggesting a dynamic interplay between the sea and the land. The mention of "ancient monarchs" dancing in "wild, unburdened majesty" introduces a theme of liberation, where these figures are not bound by earthly riches, as indicated by the absence of "robes of silk" and "crowns of gold."

As the poem progresses, the imagery of the ocean continues to dominate, with phrases like "the ocean hums its timeless tune" and "the sacred song of sea and moon" highlighting the deep connection between the natural world and the spiritual realm. The ocean serves as a liberating force, allowing "captive spirits" to be set free, contrasting sharply with the human world, which is described as a "fading spark of dust and pride." This juxtaposition emphasizes the transient nature of human existence compared to the eternal qualities of the sea.

The emotional arc of the poem moves from a sense of wild majesty and freedom to a tranquil resolution, as seen in the closing lines where the "weary monarchs rest at last". The tone shifts from exuberance to peaceful acceptance, suggesting a harmony between the natural and spiritual worlds. The use of free verse allows for fluidity and movement, mirroring the ebb and flow of the tides.

Literary devices such as metaphor and imagery are prevalent throughout the poem, enhancing its themes. The ocean itself is a metaphor for freedom, while the "shadows cast against the night" symbolize the ephemeral nature of existence. The poem's significance lies in its reflection on the beauty of nature as a sanctuary from the constraints of human life, inviting readers to contemplate their place within the larger tapestry of existence.
