Because of the situation, things turned out this way.
We understood the core of the situation and moved on.
Yet, we still see those dreams, the same dreams of love.
A soft, living memory of those forgotten past moments.
I remember those people we used to know.
When they came to meet again, something changed.
The spinning world dreams so many dreams.
Yet, because of that dream, we became real again.
Upon seeing, the seriousness of the situation is great.
Nothing seems to have any meaning.
Whose fear still lingers in the situation?

Explanation

Jon Elia's ghazal delves into the complexities of human emotions and the passage of time. The poem opens with a reflection on how the state of affairs has evolved, suggesting a transformation or acceptance of circumstances. The poet acknowledges an understanding of the essence of these circumstances, yet dreams of love persist, indicating a longing for past emotions. The imagery of 'a faint, living memory' evokes nostalgia and the persistence of past moments in the present.

The poem continues with a recollection of people once known, highlighting the changes that occur over time. The return of these individuals signifies a shift, perhaps in relationships or perceptions. The metaphor of the 'spinning world' dreaming numerous dreams suggests the relentless passage of time and the multitude of experiences it brings. Despite this, the poet finds truth or authenticity in these dreams, indicating a reconciliation with the past.

Emotionally, the poem navigates from introspection to a sense of acceptance and understanding. The tone is contemplative, marked by a blend of nostalgia and philosophical reflection. The poet grapples with the seriousness of circumstances, ultimately questioning the fear that lingers within them.

Elia employs literary devices such as metaphor and repetition to convey the depth of his introspection. The recurring theme of dreams serves as a metaphor for desires and memories, while the repetition of 'state of affairs' underscores the central theme of change and acceptance. The ghazal's structure, with its couplets and refrain, enhances the lyrical quality and emotional resonance.

Ultimately, the poem reflects on the inevitability of change and the enduring nature of human emotions. It captures the essence of Jon Elia's poetic style, characterized by its introspective and philosophical depth, and contributes to his legacy as a profound thinker and poet of the 20th century.
