هَل بَقَى لِلْقَلْبِ أَهْلٌ أَوْ حَبِيبُ
Is there anyone left for the heart, or a beloved?
أَمْ غَدَا قَلبِي ضَيِّقًا لَا قَرِيبُ
Or has my heart become narrow, with no one near?
لَا تَلُومِ القَلْبَ فِي ذِكرِ الرَفِيقِ
Do not blame the heart for remembering the friend.
يَذكُرُ الجِفنَ اشْتِيَاقًا لَا يَؤُوبُ
It recalls the eyelid with longing that does not return.

Explanation

This poem captures the essence of longing and heartache, a common theme in classical Arabic poetry. The opening line, "Is there anyone left for the heart, or a beloved?" sets a tone of despair and questioning, suggesting a deep sense of loss. The poet reflects on the heart's condition, asking whether it has become too constricted to hold anyone dear. This imagery of a 'narrow heart' evokes feelings of isolation and emotional suffocation.

In the subsequent lines, the speaker implores not to blame the heart for its memories of a friend, indicating that the heart's longing is natural and unavoidable. The phrase "It recalls the eyelid with longing that does not return" beautifully encapsulates the pain of unrequited love or separation, where the memory of a beloved is both cherished and painful. The eyelid symbolizes a closeness that is now lost, enhancing the emotional weight of the poem.

The emotional arc of the poem moves from a state of questioning and despair to a deeper understanding of the heart's nature. The tone shifts from a sense of loss to a recognition of the heart's yearning, portraying a complex emotional landscape.

Craft-wise, the poem employs metaphors and imagery effectively. The metaphor of the heart as a physical space that can become 'narrow' evokes a visceral response, while the imagery of the eyelid adds a layer of intimacy to the longing expressed. The use of repetition in the structure reinforces the feelings of nostalgia and sorrow.

Ultimately, this poem reflects the timeless themes of love, loss, and the human condition, resonating with the rich tradition of Arabic poetry that often explores the depths of emotional experience. It highlights the poet's ability to articulate profound feelings that transcend time and culture.
