Never be out of a Job
Never be out of a Job
The woman at the check out leans in to the cashier,
A woman at the checkout talks to the cashier,
Her next door neighbour from years ago.
who used to be her neighbor long ago.
She’s been in pain for a fortnight, dosed up on pink medicine.
‘She’s been in pain for two weeks, taking pink medicine.
But you can’t find a dentist from Penzance to Saltash .’
But you can’t find a dentist anywhere nearby.’
The cashier shakes her head,
The cashier shakes her head,
scanning the 2 litre bottle of effervescent sweetness.
while scanning the large bottle of sweet soda.
Poor mite, give her my love
‘Poor thing, send her my love’
Later at the school gate she stands beside her friend.
Later at the school gate, she stands with her friend.
I waited for an hour on the phone for the urgent dentist.’
‘I waited an hour on the phone for the urgent dentist.’
It’ll pass,’ sighs her friend
‘It will get better,’ her friend sighs
besides, they’re only baby teeth.’
‘besides, they’re just baby teeth.’
the kids dash from the classroom door - released like shooting fireworks out across the playground.
The kids rush out of the classroom door - like fireworks shooting across the playground.
Clutching bags of chewy treasure
Holding bags of chewy candy
given out for someone’s birthday
given out for someone's birthday
- Lara? Maybe Anna?
- Lara? Maybe Anna?
Her sticky hand slides into her mum’s. Chewing greedily the bright pieces of loveliness
Her sticky hand slips into her mom's. Eating greedily the bright pieces of candy
she skips down the hill towards home.
she skips down the hill towards home.
As They pile in through the door,
As they come in through the door,
Mum announces -
Mom announces -
lemonade and grandma’s chocolate cake to make my little girl smile again
‘lemonade and grandma’s chocolate cake to make my little girl smile again’
brown crumbs rain from her chin,
brown crumbs fall from her chin,
she sucks the icing from her finger tips, smiles a smile of chocolate happiness.
she licks the icing off her fingers, smiling a chocolatey smile.
Later as she yawns,
Later, as she yawns,
Dad sweeps her up onto his shoulders
Dad lifts her onto his shoulders
Carried upwards to a place of rest and dreaming
Carrying her up to a place of rest and dreams
pink milk and biscuits?’ he whispers
‘pink milk and biscuits?’ he whispers
Nodding sleepily, she cuddles in tight
Nodding sleepily, she cuddles in tight
Crumbs disappear into the folds of her pillow
Crumbs disappear into her pillow's folds
she snuggles under the covers
she snuggles under the blankets
Dad wishes her sweet dreams.
Dad wishes her sweet dreams.
But In the darkness come the tears.
But in the dark, the tears come.
Once stronger than steel
Once strong as steel
in 4 short years cracked away as egg shell, revealing soft brown rot.
in just 4 years, she cracked like an eggshell, revealing soft decay.
Throbbing, pounding ceaselessly,
Throbbing, pounding non-stop,
cries bring mum and the bottle of sweet pink magic
cries bring mom and the bottle of sweet pink medicine
To dull the pain into the blackness
to numb the pain into darkness.
Hiccuping sobs into the pillow
Hiccuping sobs into the pillow
she passes fitfully back into sleep.
she fits back into sleep.
The woman smiles at the cashier as she scans the 2 litre bottle of effervescent sweetness.
The woman smiles at the cashier as she scans the large bottle of sweet soda.
She’s been to see the Special Dentist, they’re going to rip out 12.’
‘She’s been to see the Special Dentist; they’re going to take out 12.’
Aw, the poor lamb,’ says the cashier
‘Oh, the poor child,’ says the cashier
but I’m so pleased they can fix itshe laughs. ‘And those dentists, they’ll never be out of a job.’
‘but I’m glad they can fix it,’ she laughs. ‘And those dentists will never be out of a job.’

Explanation

This poem captures the everyday experiences of childhood, pain, and community through the lens of a child's dental issues and the interactions of adults around her. The opening line, 'Never be out of a Job,' sets a tone of resilience and continuity, hinting at the unending nature of certain professions, especially in healthcare. The narrative unfolds with a woman at a checkout discussing a neighbor's dental pain, illustrating the communal concern that permeates the poem. The phrase 'dosed up on pink medicine' evokes a childlike innocence, contrasting with the serious nature of dental health, as the woman expresses sympathy for her neighbor.

As the poem progresses, it shifts to a school scene where children are released like 'shooting fireworks,' emphasizing their joy and freedom. The imagery of 'chewy treasure' and 'sticky hand' encapsulates the delight of childhood, while the mother's promise of 'lemonade and grandma's chocolate cake' reinforces the nurturing aspect of family life. However, the tone darkens as the child experiences pain, described vividly through 'throbbing, pounding ceaselessly.' The metaphor of 'cracked away as eggshell' poignantly illustrates the fragility of childhood, revealing the emotional turmoil beneath the surface of sweetness.

The poem's emotional arc transitions from joy to sorrow, reflecting the complexities of growing up. The use of free verse allows for a natural flow that mirrors the unpredictability of life. Literary devices such as imagery and metaphor enhance the reader's connection to the child's experience, making the pain palpable. The closing lines return to the checkout scene, where the cashier's comment about dentists 'never being out of a job' serves as a bittersweet reminder of the cyclical nature of pain and healing in life.

Ultimately, the poem speaks to the universal themes of childhood innocence, the inevitability of pain, and the comforting presence of community, making it a poignant reflection on the human experience.
