Gods of Poker

The poker room smells like tacky carpet, half-empty coffee cups, and Social Security checks

Still, I take my seat at the altar

I have toiled to be here, rolling my rock up a mountain of theory - equity, implied odds, volatility I record my results like a stock market chart

But the gods mock my spreadsheets my math my strategies

For the last ten years I struggled, patient, persevering, like Odysseus This game is a siren call But I, not blessed with loyal crew to bind me, am smashed on savage rocks alone

My headphones play "The Turn of a Friendly Card" and I am desperate for one, and long overdue But the hammer blows keep coming - the cruelest rivers, the merciless bad beats

So much brutality for a bloodless sport

Across the felt from me sit pathetic idiots and yet for all their bumbling incompetence the gods of poker grant their prayers to spite me

for my sin of lust for mastery

Gods of Poker

The poker room has an odor like cheap carpet, half-full coffee cups, and government checks

Still, I sit down at this sacred place

I have worked hard to be here, pushing my burden up a mountain of ideas - value, chances, unpredictability I keep track of my results like a financial graph

But the gods laugh at my calculations my numbers my plans

For the last decade I have fought, calm and determined, like Odysseus This game calls to me like a siren But I, not having loyal friends to help me, am wrecked on harsh rocks alone

My headphones play "The Turn of a Friendly Card" and I really need one, and I should have had one long ago But the hard hits keep coming - the worst situations, the unfair losses

So much cruelty for a game without blood

Across the table from me sit foolish people and yet despite their clumsy mistakes the poker gods answer their wishes to hurt me

for my desire to be the best
