to the shore CANTO I

In the middle of my life's journey I found myself in a dark forest where I lost the straight path

It's hard to describe how tough it was this wild, harsh, and dense forest which brings back fear in my mind

So bitter that death seems less so but to talk about the good I found there I will tell of other things I saw

I can't really say how I got there I was so sleepy at that moment when I left the true path

But when I reached the bottom of a hill where that valley ended that had filled my heart with fear

I looked up and saw its shoulders already lit by the planet's rays that guide others straight on every path

Then the fear calmed a little that had stayed in my heart through the night I spent in such distress

And like someone with tired breath who has escaped from the sea
