Crossing Brooklyn Ferry
Flood-tide below me! I see you face to face. Clouds of the west—sunset’s swirling glow, The wind blows and swirls from the sea, The deepening sky has its lines full of wonder, And full of desire for what I might never know. I see a divine sight, a joyous occasion, I see the evening — unravelling of the day, Beautiful spirits come to the heart, The dreams which I have cherished now dispatched, And the water moves in currents deep, From your shallows to your farthest reaches.
The darkened horizon claims my gaze, In the comfort of silence, the gathering throng, I ask, what body do the waters tempt, What presence does the night receive beyond? I hear the echoes, sound of my kin, Each figure reflected across the wide current, This ferry, connected to the world, our hearts, Shall it not carry us, through night into morning? This moment discloses what this hard heart had sought, The reflection of each one who comes and goes, All who’ve crossed and all who will cross evermore, For we have not simply passed on by, But have been reborn in this movement of life.
But now, O beautiful souls! you and I, We are as waves upon the water, as mist upon the shores. As much as your thoughts are part of me and mine of you, This is where our destinies spark and collide, This ferry ride has woven us together, Our lives are carried into the connection vast, Each journey intertwines, though they may never meet. The twilight dazzles and speaks to us, We touch however briefly, through presence and time, And as the vessel moves onward through the tides, I rejoice, for I watch you, for you see me. Let each of us hold fast to the bond we share, As lives traverse through boom and blare, Uniting within this vast cosmic dance, As we witness the contours of our shared moments near and far.
The high tide is below me! I see you clearly. Clouds in the west with the glow of sunset, The wind blows and twists from the ocean, The sky deepens with lines full of wonder, And full of longing for things I may never know. I see a divine sight, a joyful moment, I see the evening — the day unwinding, Beautiful spirits come to the heart, The dreams I cherished are now sent away, And the water moves in deep currents, From your shallow parts to your farthest edges.
The dark horizon catches my gaze, In the quiet of silence, the gathering crowd, I ask, what body do the waters entice, What presence does the night take in beyond? I hear the echoes, sounds of my people, Each figure mirrored across the wide current, This ferry, connected to the world, our hearts, Will it not carry us, through night into morning? This moment reveals what this hard heart desired, The reflection of each person who comes and goes, All who have crossed and all who will cross forever, For we have not just passed by, But have been reborn in this movement of life.
But now, O beautiful souls! you and I, We are like waves on the water, like mist on the shores. As much as your thoughts are part of me and mine of you, This is where our destinies ignite and collide, This ferry ride has woven us together, Our lives are carried into the vast connection, Each journey intertwines, though they may never meet. The twilight dazzles and speaks to us, We touch however briefly, through presence and time, And as the vessel moves onward through the tides, I rejoice, for I watch you, for you see me. Let each of us hold tight to the bond we share, As lives move through noise and chaos, Uniting within this vast cosmic dance, As we witness the shapes of our shared moments near and far.
