To Daffodils

Original Poetry

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon; As yet the early-rising sun Has not attain'd his noon.

Until the hasting day But to the even-song; And, having pray'd together, we Will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you, We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you, or anything.

As your hours do, and dry Like to the summer's rain; Or as the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again.

Translation

Beautiful Daffodils, we are sad to see You leave us so quickly; The early-rising sun Has not yet reached its peak.

Until the day moves on Towards the evening song; And, having prayed together, we Will go with you as well.

We have little time to remain, like you, We have a very short spring; As quickly as you grow, you meet decay, As you do, or anything else.

As your hours do, and dry up Like summer's rain; Or like the pearls of morning dew, Never to be found again.
