Meeting at Night
The grey sea and the long black land; And the yellow half-moon large and low; And the startled little waves that leap - personification, nautical imagery In fiery ringlets from their sleep, As I gain the cove with pushing prow, - nautical imagery, determination And quench its speed i' the slushy sand. - quench its speed
Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach; Three fields to cross till a farm appears; A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch And blue spurt of a lighted match, And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears, Than the two hearts beating each to each!
The gray sea and the long dark land; And the small waves that jump up suddenly In fiery curls from their rest, As I reach the cove with my boat, And slow it down in the wet sand. Then a mile of warm beach that smells like the sea;
A knock on the window, the quick sharp sound And the blue flash of a lit match, And a voice quieter, through its happiness and worries, Than the two hearts beating together!
