Poetry Analysis

A free bird leaps

Original Poetry

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

Translation

A bird that is free jumps on the moving air and glides gently along until the flow of water stops and lightly touches his wing in the bright sunlight and has the courage to take the sky.

But a bird that moves quietly inside his small enclosure rarely notices the thin bars of his anger. His wings are cut short and his legs are fastened so he makes a sound to express himself.

The bird in the cage makes music with a sound full of fear about things he doesn't know but wishes for anyway and his melody can be heard from the faraway hill because the bird in the cage sings about being free.

The free bird thinks about another gentle wind and the soft winds blowing through the trees that seem to sigh and the large worms waiting on a bright lawn at dawn and he calls the sky his own.

But a caged bird remains at the place where dreams are buried his dark shape cries out in a terrifying way his wings are cut short and his legs are fastened so he makes a sound to express himself.

The bird in the cage makes music with a sound full of fear about things he doesn't know but wishes for anyway and his melody can be heard from the faraway hill because the bird in the cage sings about being free.
