HAUNTED HOUSE

Original Poetry

HAUNTED HOUSE

my finger runs across the banister up to the door the paint flaking off the gold knob tarnished and window covered in cobwebs

slowly turning the knob the door creaks open lights flicker as I enter dragging my fingers across the dusty end table where my keys go and your picture sits guarding them

spiders skitter across the floor into the kitchen across yellow caution tape

burning sage and your strawberry perfume linger

your bookshelf sits empty at the end of the hallway well almost

a silver box sits on the sagging middle shelf sparkling

taking the steps up to the attic where the mice chew on the corners of the boxes opening the boxes the pictures pristine

taking the boxes downstairs putting your smile on every table

placing lilies between each

the couch sits facing the kitchen the cushion faded and dented I sit down and drift away

Translation

HAUNTED HOUSE

my finger glides along the railing towards the door the paint is peeling the gold knob is dull and the window is covered in spider webs

gently turning the knob the door creaks open the lights flicker as I step inside running my fingers over the dusty table where I usually keep my keys and your photo is there watching over them

spiders hurry across the floor into the kitchen over yellow warning tape

the smell of burning sage and your strawberry scent remains

your bookshelf is empty at the end of the hall well, almost empty

a silver box is there on the sagging middle shelf shining

climbing the stairs to the attic where mice nibble on the edges of the boxes opening the boxes the pictures are untouched

bringing the boxes down putting your smile on every table

placing lilies between each one

the couch faces the kitchen the cushion is worn and indented I sit down and lose myself
