O miseri o codardi Figliuoli avrai. Miseri eleggi. Immenso Tra fortuna e valor dissidio pose Il corrotto costume.
A me disfiori e scioglia Vecchiezza i membri, o padre; a me sâappresti, Dicea, la tomba, anzi che lâempio letto Del tiranno mâaccoglia.
CosĂŹ lâeterna Roma In duri ozi sepolta Femmineo fato avviva unâaltra volta.
After leaving your home And the quiet, happy illusions and old mistakes, A heavenly gift that makes this lonely place beautiful to you, Destiny pulls you into the chaos of life; Learn from the difficult times and the shameful era That harsh fate has given us, my sister, As you will add to the unhappy family in unhappy Italy. Prepare your bloodline with strong examples. Gentle breezes are denied by cruel fate To human virtue, And a pure soul cannot be contained in a weak heart.
You will have children who are either miserable or cowardly. Choose the miserable ones. A great divide between luck and bravery Is caused by corrupt habits. Alas, too late, And in the twilight of human affairs, Those born today gain movement and awareness. Heaven cares about this: let it be your main concern That your children do not grow up as friends of fortune, Nor as playthings of fear or hope: thus you will be called happy in the future: Since (in a shameful way, Of a lazy and fake lineage) We despise living virtue, and praise it only when it's gone.
Women, your country expects much from you; Not to harm or disgrace humanity, But to tame the iron and fire with the sweet light Of your eyes. The wise and strong act and think According to your wisdom; and as much as the day Encircles with the divine chariot, it bows to you. I ask you for the reason of our age. Does the sacred Flame of youth die out by your hand? Is our nature weakened and broken by you? Are the sleepy minds, unworthy desires, And the diminished native strength your faults?
Love is a spur to noble acts, For those who value it, and beauty teaches high affection. The soul of one who does not rejoice in his heart When the winds come down to battle, And when clouds gather on Olympus, And the storm strikes the mountains, Is devoid of love. O wives, O young maidens, let those who avoid danger, And those unworthy of their country, Who place their desires and common affections in low places, Be met with hate and disdain; If in the feminine heart Love for men burned, not for girls.
May it displease you to be called mothers of weak offspring. Let your lineage be accustomed to enduring The damages and tears of virtue, And condemn and despise what the shameful age values and cherishes; Let it grow for the country, and learn the great deeds, And what the land owes to its ancestors. As the children of Sparta grew Among the memories and the fame To the Greek name; Until the young bride girded the faithful Sword at the dear side, and then Spread her black hair On the bloodless and naked body When he returned in the preserved shield.
Virginia, to you the soft Cheek was softened by the heavenly fingers Of omnipotent beauty, and the mad Lord of Rome was disconsolate by your proud disdain. You were indeed lovely, and you were In the season that invites sweet dreams, When the rough paternal sword broke Your whitest breast, And you willingly descended to Erebus. To me old age deflowers and loosens The limbs, o father; prepare for me, She said, the tomb, rather than the impious bed Of the tyrant welcomes me. And if indeed life and breath Rome will have from my blood, and you slay me.
O generous one, even though The sun shone more beautifully in your days Than it does today, yet consoled and satisfied Is that tomb which the native land honors with tears. Behold around your lovely remains The Roman offspring sparkles with new anger. Behold the tyrant sullies his hair with dust; And liberty inflames The oblivious hearts; and in the subdued Land the Latin Mars arduously camps From the dark pole to the torrid confines. Thus eternal Rome, Buried in harsh idleness, Is revived once more by feminine fate.
