She Walks in Beauty
She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!
She walks in beauty, like the night She is as beautiful as the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; With clear skies and shining stars; And all that’s best of dark and bright The best qualities of both dark and light Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Come together in her appearance and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light Softened to that gentle light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. That heaven denies to the flashy day.
One shade the more, one ray the less, One more shadow or one less ray of light, Had half impaired the nameless grace Would have diminished her indescribable beauty
Which waves in every raven tress, That flows in every black hair, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Or gently brightens her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, Where sweet thoughts are expressed calmly, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. How pure and precious is their home.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, And on her cheek, and over her forehead, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, So soft, calm, and yet expressive, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, The winning smiles and glowing colors, But tell of days in goodness spent, Reveal days spent in goodness,
A mind at peace with all below, A mind at peace with everything below, A heart whose love is innocent! A heart that loves innocently!
