You who, like a knife stab, Entered into my plaintive heart; You who, strong like a herd Of demons, came, wild and adorned,

From my humiliated mind To make your bed and your domain; — Infamous one to whom I am bound Like the convict to the chain,

Like the stubborn player to the game, Like the drunkard to the bottle, Like the carrion to the vermin — — Cursed, cursed be you!

I prayed the swift sword To conquer my freedom, And I told the treacherous poison To aid my cowardice.

Alas! the poison and the sword Held me in disdain and said to me: "You are not worthy to be taken From your cursed slavery,

Fool! — from its empire If our efforts were to free you, Your kisses would resurrect The corpse of your vampire!"
